Hi all,

After long break KeyShowX development is actually ongoing and new version should appear in the nearest future. It would be possible to jump to the specific slide, control individually slideshows on remote Macs (not only all at once), use remotely QuickTime Player in fullscreen mode, dynamically superimpose text over running video in QuickTime Player or images in slideshows.

Also there is going to be little scripting application where you can put KeyShowX commands into timed sequence.

One more option is YgoBox and open source solution for multi-screen displays using Quartz composer on a Mac.
http://anselan.blogspot.com/search/label/ygboX

Not tried it myself, but worth a look.

Hi Steve - I think you can get hold of KeyshowX but I agree it doesn't seem to be in active development.

The only alternative I've come across recently is ProVideoPlayer by Renewed Vision
http://www.renewedvision.com/pvp.php

It's for video files not Keynote presentations but does a similar job. The other option is to go with a hardware solution like the matrox dualhead2go.

If you do decide to use cameras with CCU's, they may be compatible with the rest of the intercom system. I'm currently using JVC KY-19's with the RM-300 CCU configured for two-wire intercom. Clear-com and Telex TW will both work by connecting the two wires that are _NOT_ the positive voltage....pins 1 and 3 on the XLR if I remember correctly. On a Telex TW two channel system, you get channel 2 at the camera headsets.

The entry on de-interlacing is on your old blog, so I'm posting here.

I found a program to convert video to VGA (including de-interlacing!) using an XP machine as a scaler.

It's called AMcap and it's at:
http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=video

It's scaling my dv camera full-screen right now, and I will try my analog to dv converter later today. With the Matrox dualhead adapter, it might even stretch the input across two screens.

It also looks like I can get an expresscard video capture card for my laptop for $32...since the program uses Directshow, any XP video capture card should work.

Wonderful! A new blog post. It seems that many people have shied away from your site as it was left un-attended for most of the year. Please do keep posting, and helping us with our endeavor to do great video :)

This blog could be extra important for some as we lead up to the BIG Christmas productions this year.

You could use movie maker but it's going to want to transcode all the files to DV files.
Quicktime player pro let's you edit quicktime files you could try that.

I use a program called MediaShout (http://www.mediashout.com/about/v3/video.cfm) for worship service projections, and it handles MOV files within the application. But like Andrew said, I think it does take an extra codec. It's no hassle, though. We get pretty much seamless playback.

Hi Ian,
The Tricaster has moved on a lot since I first wrote this post. They have added new features, more professional connectors and also I've heard the stability is a lot improved.
It does need someone with a 'PC-centric' approach to be totally comfortable with it. If you're a 'one knob per function' kind of guy it's not for you.
Having said this it does some stuff (like instant playback, live titling, live PPT etc.) that are very hard to replicate without a lot of money.

Re: special pricing, it's always worth asking if any educational discounts apply to churches.

Interesting analysis. I'm trying to figure out a solution for our church's internet campus broadcast. We currently use a regular switcher for our IMAG feed, which is what will usually end up on our internet stream, but we also need to be able to use other feeds for when we're showing copyrighted video, as well as bumpers before and after the broadcast, as well as any studio work on either end of the broadcast. The tricaster looks attractive, but our video engineer here has a visceral aversion to it when mentioned. I think it would work well for our purposes, especially given that it streams to flash as well as some of the virtual set technology.

Any idea if there's special pricing for churches?

Hi Dave,
Great little web-site.
To cut out the software route and quickly grab a GE flyover have you tried producing any sort of video by directly filming your P.C screen with a camcorder ? I guess one should really vid an LCD type monitor. Very interested to hear your opinion.

Hi again Paul - thanks for your input on this topic.

It's a good idea to have some passive baluns 'just in case'.
It's an interesting suggestion to 'pre-emphasise' the HF in your TV out card to compensate, but of course it won't be matched to the cable characteristics. Should be some help though.

It should be fine to send RGsB down the same Cat5 cable, as I would not expect the delays to be significant.

The cable fragility is a two-edged thing - on one hand it's cheap to replace, but if you have to replace them after every gig, that get's a bit silly.

THanks for your comments

First of all congratulations on the 'getting married' thing.
Secondly good call on the 'saying no' thing - I'm sure your wife-to-be will appreciate your decision. Some things in life just ARE more important than VLOBLIVE gigs! :-)

There's a christian festival I do the vision for every year, but the setup is getting bigger and bigger every year. I'm getting married really close to Imagine (the festival) this year, so that will probably be an exercise in saying No and doing less things to a higher standard.

Hello World,

I've been using passive baluns quite successfully for vlob gigs. They're cheap enough to have a pile to hand in case you need to run an extra signal. I see what you mean about the high frequency drop out, which made me wonder if over-increasing the sharpness factor some sources have (PC tv-out for example) would give the extra peaking needed to get more detail out of the signal at the other end.

The other option I am hoping to try out is using the same baluns to send an RGsB/RGBS signal. If each component travelled on pairs in the same cable, hopefully there won't be any delay on one signal due to varying cable length (as sometimes seen when splitting svideo C and Y over different runs).

There are boxes on ebay which will put 4 composite signals down one cat5 cable; great when you need cheap multicore to bring several signals back from the stage. I'm currently using 1video + 12v power over 1 cat5 cable, but looking into multicore cat5.

(When cables will be badly treated): - I did a gig where we were using a load of cat5 to bring video back from the stage area, to remote control cameras and send power to the cameras so each camera needed only a single cat cable run to it (great for getting cameras in difficult places).

Well you know those massive ladders on wheels? We discovered that someone had driven over all the cables, breaking at least one wire in each pair :( Sorted by an expensive run to a local shop to relieve them of all their cat5 cable. Next time it will be stranded cable, and perhapse even spade-proof armoured cat5 (that doesn't keep to the vlob mantra tho!).

(Video over Cat5 and Ethernet do NOT mix):- One day I will have to find out what happens if someone plugs in a video-plus-power-over-cat5 cable into a network card. Thats my only real worry.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi = yeah right, it can get a bit crowded. Though most of this stuff is quite small.
Re spare cable - yes that's a good point, although most of the time the soldering is for repairing existing connections rather than making new ones. That's the value of drawing out your system beforehand - you are a lot less likely to be missing that vital cable.

Hi Pol,
If you let us know more details, e.g. model no, that might help.
In general if the mixer specs don't mention synchronisation, or timebase correction then you can assume it doesn't.

The MX30, along with most consumer mixers DOES support synchronisation, but in fact you will see a very slight freezing of the output, when you switch inputs on the same bus. The way to avoid this is to set the autofade time to 3 frames or similar and use autofade to do near-instant switching using the two busses.

Hope that helps
